What is the introduction?
Mentions the topic or subject of the essay;
Gives background information to connect the reader to the topic;
What is the hook of an essay?
An opening statement (which is usually the first sentence) in an essay that attempts to grab the reader’s attention so that they want to read on);
Types of hooks
- Scene.
- Humorous statement.
- Dilemma.
- Comparison (simile or metaphor)
What is a Thesis statement?
Explains the writer`s position about the topic;
Tells the general topic;
Gives details of specific aspects of the topic that will be discussed;
What includes the Body of an essay?
Usually consists of three or more paragraphs;
Explains and supports the thesis statement;
Explains and supports the writer`s position and controlling ideas in the thesis statement;
What is the Conclusion of an essay?
Summarizes the writer`s main point;
Uses key vocabulary from the introduction;
Usually offers a suggestion, opinion or prediction;
Should not include new information;
What can a conclusion be?
A suggestion - What should be done now;
An opinion - Offers a final opinion about the topic;
A prediction - Predicts what will happen next.
How many paragraphs should an essay have?
The introduction – one paragraph.
The body – one to three paragraphs.
The conclusion – one paragraph.
