What is ‘play’ defined as
Constitutes any action performed for self-amusement with behavioural, social and psychomotor development benefits.
Simple explanations of play are hard to define..
as the notions of the activity vary across different species and under different conditions
Benefits of play include: PES
Physical - health, reduce stress, weight
Emotional - regulation, express feelings
Social - relationships

- Not necessary for survival
- Voluntary, self rewarding, pleasurable
- Differs from functional behaviour in at least one respect eg exaggerated, awkward, incomplete
- Expressed repeatedly during at least some part of an animal’s life span
- ‘Relaxed field’
