Development Flashcards
For development, what three elements are key in interaction?
Biology, Social Environment, Behaviour
What is the golden rule about development?
Children contribute and guide their own development - nothing is entirely environmental or biological
What three factors affect brain architecture and function?
Toxicity, stress and neglect
How many synapses are developed up to 3 years of age?
1000 new synapses per second
What is pruning?
The brain’s way of removing connections/synapses that are no longer needed, creates more efficient circuits
What is the largest critical window for brain development in an unborn child?
Weeks 3- 8 and 16 eg drinking alcohol can lead to brain defects is woman doesn’t know she is pregnant
Sensory development happens in stages. What is the sequence in which it develops?
Day 22 - Sight (slowest, keeps developing after birth)
4 Weeks - Hear
5 Weeks - Smell
20 Weeks - Taste
Motor development stages involve..
Week 6 - Curl body
Week 8 - Wiggle arms and legs
Week 10 - Finger movement
Week 12 - Coordinated movements eg stretch, yawn, swallow
2nd Trimester - critical reflexes eg breathing, suck/swallow
What did Bateson say about genetics?
Organisms are dynamic - genes don’t correlate specifically to one’s behaviour or personality.
What is the Maturational Perspective?
Says that brain maturations is related to newly emerging sensory, motor and cognitive functions.
What is the Interactive Specialisation?
Says that cortical development is determined by organising patterns of interregional interactions.
What is the Skill-Learning Viewpoint?
Children learn new abilities like adults learn new skills.
Maternal behaviour and brain structure changes during pregnancy. What are 3 of these?
Hormone fluctuations - promotes bonding, neurological changes - increased amygdala and prefrontal cortex activity, short term depression common but temporary
