Erythropoiesis Flashcards
What are the three major effects of EPO
1) Early release of reticulocytes from the BM to the circulation
2) Reduced time needed for cells to mature in the BM
3) Prevention of apoptosis
primary cell source of EPO
Peritubular capillaries of the kidneys
primary target cells
Progenitor cells (BFU-E & CFU-E)
What are the other hormones that affect EPO production
testosterone, prolactin, estrogen, growth hormone
How does Growth affect EPO production
It directly stimulates EPO production. GH is released from the pituitary gland
How does prolactin affect EPO production
It directly stimulated EPO production, same with GH
What hormone indirectly affects EPO production
Testosterone - it indirectly affects EPO production by stimulation of the kidneys.
What is the function of estrogen?
It indirectly inhibits EPO production, which is why women have lower RBC count than men.
How many days does it take for BFU-E to mature to an erythrocyte?
18-21 days
