Erythrocytes (RBC's) Flashcards
describe the shape of the erythrocytes
biconcave
why is the erythrocytes biconcave?
because it lost it’s nucleus and has no organelles
what are the functions of the erythrocytes?
- carry oxygen to tissues
2. removal of carbon dioxide
are erythrocytes flexible?
very flexible
what is the life span the erythrocytes?
110-120 days
what is the problem of erythrocytes?
- it does not have it’s nucleus
- it does not have DNA
- it can not repair itself
- it can not reproduce
what is the flexibility of the erythrocyte?
the flexibility of the cell allows it to adapt readily to irregular shapes and sizes of capillaries
explain one amino acid substitution
one amino acid substitution in the beta chain of hemoglobin renders it insoluble (brittle; inflexible)
what are the results of the substitution?
if you get one amino acid wrong you get sickle cell anemia
what is the hemoglobin of the erythrocytes?
4 heme groups and one Fe++
when hemoglobin binds w/oxygen you get
oxyhemoglobin
when hemoglobin binds w/carbon dioxide you get
carbamino hemoglobin
are oxyhemoglobin and carbamino hemoglobin reversible of irreversible?
reversible
when hemoglobin binds w/carbon monoxide you get
carboxyhemoglobin which is NOT reversible
how do we get different blood cells?
- cell membrane
2. glycophorin binding
