What infections/Conditions can cause Erythema multiforme?
HSV-1 or HSV-2
Mycoplasma

What drugs can trigger Erythema Multiforme?
- Barbiturates
- NSAIDs
- PCN
- Sulfonamides
- Allopurinol
- Phenytoin, Phenothiazines, Hydantoins
How much body surface area is involved with Erythema Multiforme?
<10%
How do you treat erythema multiforme?
discontinue the drug
MIld = no tx
- Will resolve spontaneously in 3-5wks
Recurrent
- Acyclovir
EM major
One or more mucous MBs involved
- oral, genital, ocular
Is EM systematically distributed?
Yes
Describe the rash of EM
Polymorphous eruption - macules—>papules—> target lesions —-> vesicles/bullae
Sharply demarcated/crusting/blistering of center
Describe the target lesion of EM
3 concentric zones
Central dark papule
Pale area
Halo of erythema
What’s the prodrome of EM?
Fever, malaise
Where can the EM rash be found?
Oral mucosa, palms & soles, generalized
What is the most common cause of EM?
Herpes simplex virus
Does EM have a negative or positive Nikolsky sign?
Negative Nikolsky sign

Malignancy
Autoimmune status
Idiopathic
