ERU-17 The Uterus and Vagina Flashcards
From what do the uterus, vagina, and fallopian tubes develop?
The Mullerian ducts (paramesonephric ducts)
Congenital anomalies of the uterus often have corresponding defects in the ___.
Kidneys
What are the 4 anatomic divisions of the uterus?
Fundus, corpus, isthmus, and cervix
The isthmus of the uterus corresponds to what area of the uterus during pregnancy?
The lower uterine segment
Uterus
- serosa/perimetrium
- myometrium
- endometrium (basal and functional layers)
Endometrial cavity is between the two functional layers of endometrium.
Anteversion vs retroversion
Anteflexion vs retroflexion
Uterus tilted forward/backward in the BODY
Uterus folded forward/backward on ITSELF
“normal” position is anterverted/anteflexed
Levoverted uterus vs dextroverted uterus
Uterus located more to the Left vs right
"cornu" = horn of the uterus. bicornuate = 2 horns "colli: = the cervix. bicollis = 2 cervix
"metra" = uterus; hematometra = blood in uterus "colpo" = vagina; hydrocolpos = fluid in vagina
Adenomyosis
Adenomyoma
Invasion of endometrium into the myometrium.
Focal adenomyosis
Common in a fibroid uterus
Clinical findings of adenomyosis
uterine enlargement
boggy, tender uterus, dysmenorrhea, menometrorrhagia, pelvic pain, dyschezia, dyspareunia, multiparous
Ultrasound findings of adenomyosis
Diffusely enlarged uterus
Hypoechoic or echogenic areas adjacent to endometrium
Heterogeneous myometrium
Myometrial cysts
Ill-defined interface btw myometrium and endometrium
Thickening of the fundus or posterior myometrium
Leiomyoma vs leiomyosarcoma in ultrasound findings
Leiomyosarcoma grow rapidly. Otherwise they will look the same.
What is a Gartner Duct Cyst?
A cyst in the wall of the vagina. Often asymptomatic.
Precocious puberty
Pseudoprecocious puberty
Delayed puberty
Onset of puberty before the age of 8. Associated with intracranial tumors.
Not associated with gonadotropin levels. Associated with ovarian, adrenal, and liver tumors.
Absent of incomplete breast development after 12.
Isosexual precocity
Early development of secondary sexual characteristics with menses, ovulation, and elevated gonadotropin levels
