Erosional landforms Flashcards
bedding plane
a line of natural weakness in a rock
what are the different types of erosional landforms?
-concordant coastline
-discordant coastline
-erosion of a headland
-wave cut platforms
how does a concordant coastline form?
-parallel rock forms to coastline
-there’s a weakness in the outer layer of hard rock
-waves break through crack in hard rock
-waves erode soft rock very fats
-cove forms
how does a discordant coastline form?
-rock types are perpendicular to the coastline
-soft rock erodes faster than hard rock
-bays form in soft rock making the hard rock headlands
how des a headland become eroded?
- the sea attacks a weakness in the rock, eroding it to form cave
- the erosion continues until it has eroded through the headland, forming an arch
- the arch is enlarged due to the action of waves, wind and rain
- the roof of the arch collapses due to gravity and continuous erosion from the sea, the fallen material is quickly removed by the sea and a stack remains
- the stack is eroded down to a stump, often only visible at low tide
- the process may start again
how is a wave cut platform formed?
1.waves hit land, they move in a circular rotation
2. waves erode the land through hydraulic action, creating an overhang and a wave cut notch
3. overhang falls, just a wave cut notch is left
4. the waves erode the land again through hydraulic action, creating another overhang and a new wave cut notch
5. overhang falls, creating a wave cut platform, reduced depth of sea means less weight of water hitting base of cliff, therefore slows down erosion, wave cut platform starts to protect the cliff behind
