Erosion and Transportation Shaping The Land Flashcards
Name the four forms of erosion
- Hydraulic action
- Abrasion
- Attrition
- Solution
Name the four forms of transportation
- Suspension
- Solution
- Traction
- Saltation
Erosion:
How does Hydraulic action work?
Water is forced into cracks in the rock, then is compressed and forces the rock apart
Erosion:
How does Abrasion work?
Loose rocks are thrown against the cliff wearing away at the rock like sandpaper
Erosion:
How does Attrition work?
Loose rocks are swirled around and are worn in smaller, rounder pieces
Erosion:
How does Solution work?
Seawater dissolves material from the rock
Transportation:
How does Suspension work?
Fine sediment is carried along in suspension in the water
Transportation:
How does Solution work?
Dissolved materials is carried along in solution-you can’t see it
Transportation:
How does Traction work?
Large pebbles and cobbles are rolled along the seabed
Transportation:
How does Saltation work?
Small pebbles are moved when one pebble hits another causing it to bounce
