- Adopted belief from Sigmeund Freud.
- Development is characterized by a series of stage related conflicts between two perspectives.
- he said you have to have both perspectives to achieve identity strengths (virtues)
Stage 1: Trust vs Mistrust
Virtue: Hope
Age: 0-18 months
Infant relies on mothers care and trusts the mother if consistent.
Stage 2: Autonomy vs Shame Doubt
Virtue: Will
Age: 2-4 years
Being able to do things on your own will be beneficial for development. Inversely, not being able to do things on your own will affect development.
Stage 3: Initiative vs guilt
Virtue: Purpose
Age: 5-8
Setting goals and reaching them. If not able to reach goals can feel guilty and potentially lash out at parents.
State 4: Industry vs Inferiority
Virtue: Competence
Age: 9-12
Children more receptive to feedback from teachers about their competence. If positive, they feel more confident. If negative, feel less competent and confident about abilities.
Stage 5: Identity vs Role Confusion
Virtue: Fidelity
Age: 13-19
Prolonged. Adolescents setting boundaries with parents. Searching for a place within society
Stage 6: intimacy vs Isolation
Virtue: Love
Age: 20-39
Finding a true intimate and romantic partner in contrast to living alone.
Stage 7: Generativity vs Stagnation
Virtue: Care
Age: 40-59
Giving back to future generations.
Stage 8: Ego Integrity vs Despair
Virtue: Wisdom
Age: After 60
Reflect on whether they lived a good life
