If needs are dependably met, infants develop a sense of basic trust.
Trust vs. mistrust (0-1 yrs old)
Toddlers learn to exercise their will and do things for themselves, or they doubt their abilities.
Autonomy vs shame and doubt (1-2 yrs old)
Preschoolers learn to initiate tasks and carry out plans, or they feel guilty about efforts to be independent.
Initiative vs Guilt (3-5 yrs old)
Children learn the pleasure of mastering tasks, or they feel inferior.
Competence vs inferiority (6-puberty)
Teenagers develop a sense of self by testing roles and then integrating them to form a single identity, or they become confused about who they are.
Identity vs Role Confusion (teen years to 20s)
Young adults struggle to form close relationships and gain the capacity for intimate love, or they feel socially isolated.
Intimacy vs isolation (20s to early 40s)
In middle age, people discover a sense of contributing to the world, usually through family or work, or they may feel a lack of purpose.
Generativity vs stagnation (40s to 60s)
When reflecting on their past, older adults develop a sense of satisfaction with the course of their life, or they feel like their life was a failure.
Integrity vs Despair (60s and up)
