Trust v Mistrust
birth to one year
learning about the ability to trust through consistency of caregivers
Autonomy v Shame & Doubt
ages 1-3
beginning to assert independence; making choices for themselves; might feels ashamed in choices if independence is not encouraged
Initiative v Guilt
ages 3-6
asserting themselves more frequently and more secure in their ability to lead others.
Industry v Inferiority
ages 6-puberty
developing pride in their accomplishments; developing “projects” and feeling good about what they have achieved
industry sounds like puberty
Identity v Role Confusion
adolescence
exploring the future and life paths, and and confused about where their “role” is in the world.
Intimacy v Isolation
young adulthood
sharing themselves more intimately with others and developing relationships with long term commitment.
Generativity v Stagnantion
middle adulthood
settling down and understanding how they “fit into the world”; those who fail to achieve these goals feel “stagnant” and unproductive
Ego Integrity v Despair
older adults/ seniors
contemplating life accomplishments and feeling dissatisfied; feeling hopeless
