Equlibrium Flashcards
Collision theory
Particles most collide with enough kinetic energy and in proper orientation
Reaction rate
The changing of reactants to products (or the reverse) per unit of time (seconds or minutes)
Activated complex/transition state
Peak of the energy diagram, temporary arrangement of reactants that can either go to products or back to reactants
Activation energy
The minimum amount of energy required in order to get a reaction started
Endothermic
Reactions where energy is put in
Exothermic
Reaction where energy is released
Catalyst
Allows reaction to proceed by lowering the activation energy, speeds up reaction rate, doesn’t effect concentration
Reversible reaction
A reaction that can move in both forward and reverse directions
Chemical equilibrium
The state in which the forward and reverse reactions take place at the same rate
Le Châtelier’s Principle
When a stress is applied to a system at equilibrium, the equilibrium will shift in order to relieve the stress
Equilibrium constant (Keq)
Can be used to determine whether products or reactants are favored in a chemical equilibrium
Inhibitor
A substance that slows down or prevents a particular chemical reaction from occurring
