What are the pros and cons of intubation?
Can be life saving
Inc risk of infection with monitoring lines
ICU drugs can precipitate cardiac arrest
Prolonged stay in ICU reduces muscle mass and it not good
What are the different types of O2 delivery?
Nasal cannula
Non rebreathe mask/reservoir bag mask
Venturi
What are the pros/cons of a nasal cannula?
Not too obstructive to patient
Dries out nose
Not all O2 goes into patient
Max 5L/min
What are the pros/cons of a non rebreathe/reservoir bag mask?
Can give 85% O2 aka 15L/min
Always use with ABCDE
Must fill bag before give patient
What are the pros/cons of a venturi mask?
Can give precise amount of O2
Uncomfortable
Snug
Hard for patients to talk
What are the sizes of cannulas?
14G - orange 16G - grey 18G - green 20G - pink 22G - blue
How much more efficient is the orange cannula than the blue one?
It is about 10 times quicker to deliver through an orange
What are the flow rates of the different cannulas?
Orange - 10L/hr Grey - 7L/hr Green - 3L/hr Pink - 2L/hr Blue - 1L/hr
