Flat collar

A

has a traditional buckle or snap-release fasteners, variety of materials available, does not tighten when tension applied but does have a risk of the animal backing out of it especially dogs with narrow heads and small ears like a greyhound or Doberman, puts pressure on trachea when dog is pulling or lunging

Limited Slip Collar

A

restricts slightly when tension put on but loose enough to be comfortable with no pressure. Keeps dog from backing out but cannot tighten past the safety loop.

Martingale collar

A

look similar to a traditional flat collar, but a short section of the collar is actually a smaller loop of either webbing or a chain with a leash attachment point. When clipped into a leash, it uses a limited amount of cinching to keep a dog from backing out of their collar.

Gentle Leader

A

type of head halter that rests on jaw bones of the dog. Jawbones are not as tender as the throat. If you control the head you control where the dog will go. Needs to be fitted properly by fitting the neck band and nose band appropriately.

A

has a segment that will come apart if undue force is applied to the collar. Also has 2 separate rings for safe leash attachment for walks

Choke chain collar or slip collar

A

no limit on how far the collar can tighten. Death by asphyxiation can occur if left on an unsupervised dog or used on a dog that is tied up.

Pinch or Prong Collar

A

a type of limited slip collar that is made of segments that end in prongs. When leash pressure is applied the prongs put pressure on and pinch the dogs neck. Can come apart at the connections if not fastened properly

Citronella bark collar

A

automatically releases a spray of citronella a harmless but aversive scent when it detects barking. Not recommended for barking due to fear or anxiety.

Electronic containment systems

A

invisible fencing system that uses a radio signal transmitted to a remote receiver device on the dog’s collar. When the dog approaches the boundary line (usually underground and invisible) the dog is shocked. Some collars may provide a vibration warning before the shock. High risk of fallout or dog running through the boundary after something exciting and unable or unwilling to come back to the property.
