Open vs Closed castration
Open involves cutting into the parietal layer of the vaginal tunic
Closed does not cut into parietal layer of vaginal tunic
**Does NOT depend on skin closure
Four Maini complications following castration
- Hemorrhage
- if you can count drips or see a stream its too much - Eventration
- through internal inguinal ring
- small intestine and/or omentum - Excessive swelling
- grapefruit or bigger! (some slight swelling is normal) - Infection
- ascending –> abdominal adhesions (rare)
Abnormal perineal conformation mares - caslick
Anus is sunken in –> when she defecates it can fall into vaginal cavity
Indications and methods to perform Caslick’s
Older mares, multiple pregs, loss of condition, perineal lacerations
Suture proximal portion of vulva
Can be temporary or permanent
