Equine Influenza vaccination Flashcards
What is significant about influenza and competitions?
Influenza is the only disease where various competition bodies require horses to be vaccinated against prior to competition
There are a few diff influenza vaccines on the market so which to use?
OIE recommend need to contain 2 sub species of influenza- Florida clade 1 and florida clade 2 as the most prevalent ones are from these 2 clades
So we use Proteq-flu as number one which contains these two. Equilis prequenza if not pro as it contains clade 1
Rules of equine influenza primary/ restart course in general
o 1 jab
o 2nd 4-6 weeks later
o 3rd 5-6 months after that
o yearly
Jockey club rules of influenza jab
Given 5-6 months old o 1 jab o 2nd 4-6 weeks later o 3rd 5-6 months after that o yearly
No vaccination to be given on day of race or on any of the 6 days before the race
Horse must have had 2 initial vaccinations (plus 6 days) before can compete at all
Jockey club: primary course
1st influenza jab
21-92 days second
Then
Booster 150-215 days after 2nd jab in primary course
Then
Boosters intervals no more than a year
What do FEI govern
like Olympics, Badminton Horse Trials
FEI influenza jab rules
Primary course (same as jockey) = 2 jabs 21-92 days apart.
Booster - within 7 calendar months after 2nd jab
Booster every 12 months
however
1. competing horses, last booster must be within 6 months +21 days of the competition. and NOT within 7 days before.
2. So if a horse is regularly competing with FEI they need a booster every 6 months
3. Cant have a booster within 7 days, advise within 14 as can make them feel grotty
Vaccine rules
- Once vaccinated, sign passport
- This is CERTIFICATION = only done by veterinarian. LEGAL job. Vet nurse cannot certify done vaccination, only vet. Some competing bodies don’t like you signing your own horse’s passport
- If passport not present by law you shouldn’t vaccinate, however occurs so much that you can update at later date otherwise wouldn’t get any work done
The horse is one day late for vaccination. Can you back date the passport?
NOOO
Would be false certification and therefore an offence
- will get struck off
You have made a mistake entering the vaccine details on the passport. What do you do?
- strike out the whole wrong entry with a single line
- Fill in a whole new entry in the next line
- Don’t try to amend the error
- Countersign and date where you’ve struck out the whole entry
You have been asked to fill in the details of a vaccination that a colleague did- can you?
YES as long as you can be certain the vaccine has been given to the horse in question by checking the practise records or consulting with colleague.
If you’re not certain then do NOT fill in certificate. as can be struck off if horse not vaccinated.
When do we vaccinate after primary course?
YEARLY
tetanus with flu every other year
