Dog vaccination Flashcards
List the core vaccinations advised for dogs in the UK
What is the core canines vaccinations under the World small animal veterinary association
DHPL
- Canine Distemper
- Canine infectious Hepatitis
- Canine Parvovirus
- Leptospirosis
These vaccinations are a MUST, all others top up based on lifestyle, where lives etc
WSAVA - distemper, hepatitis, parvo
Why vaccinate
• Responsible pet ownership o Full check from vet • Maintains a healthy pet population • Reduces deaths • Reduces incidence of zoonoses • Early detection of clinical conditions • Encourage client education o Spaying, obese, husbandry • (Validates insurance policies) o Insurance like to see animal has been going to vet
Example vaccination protocol for a pup just ages)
- 8 weeks old first Vacc DHP and lepto
- 12 weeks old 2nd vacc DHP and lepto
Pup can go outside 1 week after 2nd vacc - 1 year old Primary booster DHP and lepto
- 2 years old (lepto)
- 3 year old (lepto)
- 4 year DHP and lepto
When vaccinating pup what is in each vacc at the different ages?
Nobivac
- 8 Weeks old (1st vac) - DHPPi + L4 (nobivac company have DHPPi = distemper, hepatitis, parvo AND parainfluenza in same veil)
- 12 Weeks old (2nd vac) – DHPPi + L4 + KC
o→ Pup can go outside 1 week after 2nd vac
o Top up
o Pi only here as in brand veil. If not in veil we wouldn’t give additional Pi - 1 Years old (primary booster) – DHPPi + L4 + KC EVERYTHING. Incase still MDA at 12 weeks old
- 2 Years old – Pi + L4 + KC
- 3 Years old – Pi +L4 + KC
- 4 Years old – DHPPi + L4 + KC
What if practice talks about a booster at 6 months???
some practises offer a 3rd vac at about 6 months just in case MDA at 12 weeks as if were would mean dog has ZERO protection between 3 months and 1yr 3 months
Dog restart vacc programme….
all viral dog vaccines (Distemper, Hepatitis, parvo and parainfluenza) just require single dose of vaccine to restart.
Lepto would need booster 2- 4 weeks later.
L4 would be 4 weeks later
L2 2-4 weeks later
No DHPPi 4 weeks later when do lepto because RESTART so NO MDA = not full whack.
Canine Vaccination schedule in general (not nobivac) dog

Vaccination schedule of canine infectious resp disease
Kennel cough
o Intranasal KC contains Canine PArainfluenza and bordatella bronchiseptica
given at 8 weeks then annually (sometimes left till later as a lot for 1st puppy visit!) – could cause vet phobic dog if do all at 8 weeks so if O desperate for it advise 12 weeks
then annually
Intranasal doesn’t need injectable Pi vaccine
What to remember when giving KC vaccine
MUST ASK OWNERS IF IMMUNOCOMPROMISED or LIVES WITH ANYONE!!!
o Immunosuppressive drugs – don’t give
Immunocompromised individuals should avoid any contact with the vaccine and vaccinated dogs up to six weeks after vaccination
