7
Q

HOW to inject Somulose?

A
  • Perivascular administration may delay the onset of effect and cause pain and
result in excitement - jugular catheter is strongly recommended
  • The speed of injection is very important. Administer the full dose over 10-15
seconds to minimise premature cardiac arrest
-An injection rate that is too slow may induce normal collapse, but prolong the
    period until death

13
Q

What shoudl you do before euthanasia?

A

Premedication with an appropriate sedative is mandatory in order to produce profound
sedation before euthanasia (20ug/kg detomidine)

Coadministration with muscle relaxants such as midazolam may improve the quality of induction.

Q

Disadvantages of lethal injection?

17
Q

Describe the First 6 steps of lethal injection procedure

A
  1. Ensure handler capable and understands process – warn
eyes will not close, may gasp and paddle legs/muscle
    tremors
  2. Always have extra/spare bottle Somulose in pocket ready
  3. Clip vein if necessary - jugular by choice, consider
    cephalic for foals
  4. Sedate if necessary (Detomidine or romifidine alone)
  5. Local anaesthetic bleb at IV Catheter site
  6. Place 14G jugular catheter
18
Q

Describe the last 5 points of lethal injection procedure?

A
  1. Inject Somulose – speed of injection important remember
  2. Take the control of horse/leadrope and ensure all people present are well out of the way/move out of the school etc
  3. Guide the horse to the ground, ensuring your own personal safety.
  4. Auscultate heart, check corneal reflex (discretely)
  5. Stay at the head until ocular reflexes have stopped and the pupil is fixed and central before allowing owners to come back into space
  6. Don’t remove the head collar until all reflexes have stopped
19
Q

What happens right after injection?

A

Collapse approx. 30-40s after injection
Animal may gasp for up to 2 minutes after collapse
Death should occur between 1-3 minutes after collapse.

20
Q

What should you tell the pharmaceutical company if you have to report an AE of drug?

A
  • Name
  • Practice details
  • Horse name
  • Owners name
  • Horse’s age
  • Reason for euthanasia
  • Batch number and expiry date
  • Brief overview of process and what happened.
21
Q

Mechanics of shooting?

A

Draw cross lateral canthus of eye to opposite ear base.

22
Q

What happens after shooting?

A
  • Bleed profusely from nose – have a clinical waste bag ready
  • Likely to paddle with legs and make involuntary movements
    after shooting.
  • Heart can take quite a few minutes to stop
  • Distressingly quick
23
Q

Free bullet advantages?

24
Q

Free bullet disadvantages?

25
What other techniques out there?
- Cutting the aorta per rectum (considered inhumane in conscious horse) - Intracardiac injection - Lidocaine ? - Potassium chloride -> NEVER USE IN CONSCIOUS HORSE - anaesthetised only (KCI powder/ crystals dissolvedin water until saturated)
26
When is emergency euthanasia indicated/ when to get another opinion
27
T/F if the horse meets the BEVa guidelines but the owner/agent refuses to allow euthanasia it is your duty to the animal under your care to insist on euthanasia?
TRUE
28
When NOT to ?
Emergency - If horse does not meet the BEVA Guidelines and you do not have owner permission (ideally written) Elective – If you do not have full permission, preferably in writing Beware of issues of proof of ownership
29
Insurance Implications?
- address at time - If time -> consult insurers - - Keep critten record fo clinical condition of horse - Remeber any PME will be at the client's expense even if the insurance company asks for it - If in doubt get collectors to keep the carcase for at least 24hrs
30
Disposal/ Collection ?
- Don't say 'knackerman' - TYou practice will have a company they use - Ensure colelction arrangement are already in place for all elective euthanasia - Have details readily available - Be aware of post mortem rq /facilities
31
Can owner bury the horse?
The European Union Regulations do not allow burial of pet horses as they consider the horse to be a food animal. In Scotland and Wales, only pet horses can be buried. England does allow burial horses whether they are pets or not. * Must have permission from local council
32
When is burrial not recommended
if lethal injection used
33
What affects wether allowed to do this?
* Location in relation to water sources * Permission from landowner * Depth
34
Following euthanasi?
- Advise owner to return passport to PIO - Private or mass cremation - Ashes back, in casket or scatter box – warn owners expense and size! - Tail plait/Shoes – nice to do at the time for them to keep - Tail/mane hair jewellery/Diamonds! - Condolence cards
35
Bereavement services?
* BHS – friends at the end (FATE) scheme * Blue Cross * Animal Samaritans Pet Bereavement Service * EASE Pet Loss Support Services * Pet Bereavement Support Service * Support Line
