equine derm conditions Flashcards
what conditions cause pruritis
parasites
hypersensitivities
what are the four groups of pruritic parasites
lice, mites, ticks, nematodes
what are the two lice affecting horses
werneckiella: bitung louse, dorsolateral trunk, neck and face
haematopinus asini: sucking louse. mane, tail, fetlock and pastern
what is the diagnosis and treatment for lice
coat brush/hair pluck
pyrethrins, pyrethroids, permethrin, fipronil
what is the mite affecting horses feet
chorioptes equi
distal limbs and feathers. intense pruritis
stamping, chewing and scratching
other mites affecting horses
sarcoptes scabiei
psoroptes equi
trombiculidiasis
dermanyssuss gallinae
what is the diagnosis and treatment for mites
skin brush to diagnose
injectable ML (2 injections, 2 weeks apart)
topical ML (once every 4 wks)
what nematode causes pruritis
oxyuris equi (pinworm)
perianal pruritis
fenbendazole to treat
what is the name given to insect bite hypersensitivity
sweet itch
where is sweet itch located
what are the risk factors
mane, back, tail, ventrum
contact with culicoides, being near standing water or woods at dusk/dawn
whats the name given to dermatophilosis
rain scald
cause of rain scald
chronic moisture and skin damage causing bacterial overgrowth.
back, glutes, face and neck
rain scald consequences and treatment
causes crusting and scaling
if mild use topical antimicrobials, systemic if severe
describe bacterial folliculitis
painful lesions
what are the causes of photosensitisation
hepatogenous
ingestion of photodynamic agent
what is leukocytoclastic vasculitis
immune mediated vasculitis of distal limbs. can be painful
leukocytoclastic vasculitis treatment
steroids
avoid exposure to light
describe pemphigus folliaceous
rare autoimmune disease
causes severe crusting of skin all over body
immunosurpressants to treat but guaarded prognosis
what causes warts and plaques on young horses faces, inguinal area or ear pinnae
viral papillamatosis (self curing)
eosinophicil granuloma
frequent none painful and non pruritic focal areas of collagen necrosis.
what are the three main tumors affecting horses
sarcoid
melanoma
scc
what are the six presentations of sarcoids
- occult
- verrucose
- nodular
- fibroblastic
- mixed
- malignant
4 rules regarding sarcoids
- the more they have the more they get
- the fewer they have the fewer they get
- multiply over summer and grow over winter
- a single sarcoid implies genetic susceptinility
where are melanomas commonly seen
perineum, tail head, parotid region. most are benign but some can be malignant
