Equilibrium Flashcards
What is the Definition of a catalyst
Define Le Chatelier’s Principle
If a reaction at equilibrium is subjected to a change in pressure temperature or concentration .
The position of the equilibrium will move to counteract the change
Le Chateliers Principle only works in ____________
Homogeneous Equilibria
Reactants and products in same state
Define Dynamic Equilibrium (3)
When a reaction is in equilibrium
the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse Reaction
Concentration of reactants and products remain constant
Name the Equation any Conditions or catalysts for the Haber process
Name the Equation any Conditions or catalysts for the production of Ethanol (via Glucose)
Name the Equation any Conditions or catalysts for the production of Ethanol (via Ethene & steam )
Name the Equation any Conditions or catalysts for the production of Methanol
How does Temperature Affect Kc?
How does Concentration affect Kc
Kc doesn’t change with any change in concentration
If the reaction is in equilibrium then it will oppose the change and return stable keeping kc constant
How does Pressure affect Kc
Pressure has no effect on Kc
If the reaction is in equilibrium then it will oppose the change and return stable keeping kc constant
How does a Catalyst Affect Kc?
Catalysts have no effect on the value of Kc
A Catalyst speeds up the forward and reverse rate of reactions, hence decreasing the time an equilibrium is established
Define Kc
a value that describes the position of the equilibrium for a reaction at a given temperature
What is the Formula of Kc?
Kc(forward) xKc(reverse) =
1
Equilibrium is to the right when kc is ________
Equilibrium is to the left when kc is ________
Greater then 1
less then 1
The reaction is regraded as going into completion when _________
kc is greater then 10^10 or less then 10^-10
What is a mole fraction
The proportion of that gas present in the gas mixture
Number of moles of gas / Total Number if moles of gas in mixture
How do you calculate the partial pressure of a gas
Mole Fraction X Total pressure in mixture
SO2 and Cl2 on same side of the equilibrium
1:1 Ratio so partial pressure of SO2 is 263kPa , the same as Cl2
714-263-263=188
How does temperature affect Kp
Kp is only valid for one temperature
Changes in temperature, changes the equilibrium pressures hence kp will alter.
Kp increases with eqm shifts to the right , decreases with eqm shifts to the left
equilibrium will shift in order to combat the change
Explain the effect of adding water to an equilibrium mixture
Adding water causes the concentration of all reactants and products to decrease
Equilibrium move to opposite the change
Equilibrium shifts to the side with more moles to oppose the decrease in concentration
Name an important thing to remember when writing out Kp formulas
Use Lowercase (p_____)for partial pressures
