equilibrium Flashcards
What does Le Chatelier’s Principle say?
the position of equilibrium moves in such a way as to tend to undo the change that you have made.
What happens to equilibrium when the temperature is increased?
the position of equilibrium moves in the direction of the endothermic reaction
What happens to equilibrium when the temperature is decreased?
the position of equilibrium moves in the direction of the exothermic reaction
what happens to Kc in an exothermic reaction when the temperature increases?
the value of Kc falls
what happens to Kc in an endothermic reaction when the temperature increases?
the value of Kc increases
the only change to a system that changes the equilibrium constant (Kc) is
a change in temperature
If you decrease the concentration on one side of the reaction,
the system will favour that side and produce more of it
if you increase the pressure of a system involving a gas
the system will favour the side which produces the fewer molecules.
if you increase the pressure of a system and there are the same number of molecules on each side of the equation, what will happen?
nothing
what is the effect of a catalyst on equilibrium
Doesn’t change the position of equilibrium, Speeds up both the forward and back reactions by exactly the same amount
how to find the equilibrium constant
[C][D]/[A][B] (coefficients become powers)
