Equilibria Flashcards
What are reversible reactions?
Reaction that can go forwards and backwards.
What is dynamic equilibrium?
Where the rate of the forwards reaction is equal to the rate of the backwards reaction. The concentration of each substance reamins constant.
What does Le Chatelier’s Principle state?
That if a reaction at equilibrium is subjected to a change in pressure, temperature of concentration then the position of equilibrium will move to counteract the change.
What happens to the equilibrium if more reactants are made?
It shifts to the left.
What is a result in the equilibrium shifting to the left?
More reactants are made.
What happens to the equilibrium if more products are made?
It shifts to the right.
What is a result in the equilibrium shifting to the right?
More products are made.
What happens if you increase the pressure in a reaction at equilibrium?
The equilibrium will shift to the side with the fewest molecules.
What happens if you increase the concentration of reactants in a reaction at equilibrium?
The equilibrium will shift to the right in order to use up and reduce the concentration.
What happens if you increase the temperature in a reaction at equilibrium?
The equilibirum will shift in the endothermic direction.
What happens if you decrease the temperature in a reaction at equilibrium?
The equilibrium will shift in the exothermic direction.
What happens if you introduce a catalyst in a reaction at equilibrium?
There will be no change to the position fo equilibrium as the catalyst will speed up the rate of both reactions equally.
Is the forward reaction in the production of ethanol endotherimc or exothermic?
Exothermic.
Is the backwards reaction in the production fo ethanol endothermic or exothermic?
Endothermic.
What happens to the reaction in the production of ethanol if you decrease the temperature?
The equilibrium shifts to the right and produces more ethanol.
