Alkenes Flashcards
What are alkenes?
Unsaturated hydrocarbons.
Why are alkenes fairly reactive?
They have double bonds which have a high electron density.
Why are alkenes attacked by electrophiles?
Due to their double bond.
What is an electrophile?
An electrophile is an electron pair acceptor, it is deficient in electrons and are attracted to the double bond.
What are two examples of electrophiles?
Polar molecules and positive charge ions.
Where does the curly arrow start in an electrophilic addition reaction, the double bond or the electrophile?
The double bond.
What is the test for alkenes?
Addition of bromine, it decolours if alkenes are present.
Why does an alkene make bromine water go colourless?
The bromine is an electrophile s is it polaried as the electrons in the double bond repel electrons in Br2 and adds to the alkene forming a dibromoalkane.
What do alkenes react with to form halogenoalkanes?
Hydrogen halides.
What happens when reacting hydrogen halides with unsymmetrical alkenes?
Two different products are produced.
