Equilibria Flashcards
Define dynamic equilibrium
The rate of reactions (forwards and backwards) are equal and therefore concentrations of reactants and products are equal.
Define homogeneous equilibrium
Reactants and products are in the same physical state
What factors affect equilibrium?
Temperature, pressure (gas only), concentration (solution only), presence of a catalyst
What is the Kc equation?
Kc = ([C]^n x [D]^n) / ([A]^n x [B]^n)
What is the Kp equation?
Kp = (pC^c x pD^d) / (pA^a x pB^b)
What is the mole fraction equation?
Number of moles of a particular gas / total moles of all gases in mixture
What is the equation for partial pressure?
Mole fraction x total pressure
Define partial pressure
Pressure exerted by a particular gas in a mixture in a closed system
Define total pressure
Sum of all partial pressures
When is the reaction quotient the same as the equilibrium constant?
Only at equilibrium
What is Le Chatalier’s principle?
System reacts to oppose the change
