Equilibreum Flashcards
What 3 sensory systems help keep us upright?
Visual
Proprioceptive
Vestibular
What dysfunctions can cause Vertigo?
Labyrinthine Apparatus
Vestibular Nerve
Brainstem
What are the types of Vestibular System Disorders?
Inner ear (labyrinth) Acoustic Nerve(VIII CN) Brain(BrnStem/CerCort)
What are the effects of deficits of ocular fixation?
Height vertigo Motion sickness Head hanging Altered fixation- new glasses -moving object of fixation
What are the different types of nystagmus?
Resting/accentuated by movement
Pendular- Physiologic
Jerk- Pathologic
Hor/vert/rotational
What are traits of Peripherally caused Jerk nystagmaus?
2-20 sec latency
Associated Vertigo
Adapts to position
Fatigues on repeat testing
What are traits of Centrally caused Jerk nystagmaus? (brain stem)
No latency (happening continuously)
Variable vertigo
No adaptation
Little fatigue
What are the diagnostic tests to be done in Vertigo?
Blood Tests, EKG/Amb heart Monitor, EEG, BAER(clicks) Tilt table, BP and Pulse -Ortho Hypo -Neurally mediated syncope Audiometric Analysis Electro Nystagmogram Brain Scan Provacative tests
What is vestibular Neuritis?
Following viral infection/ idiopathic
What is Labyrinthitis?
Infectious, systemic, meningitis
Ramsey-Hunt syndrome
What causes Traumatic Peripheral Vestibular Disorders?
Perilymph fistula
Cupulolithiasis/otolymph dislocation
What are the symptoms of Meneire Syndrome?
Vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss
What are the traits of motion sickness?
Dizziness, N/V Autonomic Symptoms Malaise Over-stim of peripheral vest system Possibly induced by eye movements
What are the traits of Benign Positional Vertigo?
Nystagmus on head movement
One ear symptomatic
Free floating particles(otoconia) in posterior labyrinth
What are the Neoplasms affecting the vestibular system?
Acoustic neuroma (Schwannoma)
-Bilateral? consider NF(vRHD)
Neurofibroma
Meningioma
