Equality essay plan Flashcards

1
Q

+Progress has been made-greater social emphasis on equality

A

-Led to traditional church teachings being undermined-liberation theology etc has led to traditional views about the position of women being challenged-sally mcfague-campaigns for female ordainment and people begining to question if women should have authority within the Church-wide debate
-the fact that such a debate had influence in the church shows some progress from the traditional absolutist view about the inferiority of women held in the early church etc-rethinking of scripture in a more egalitarian way-men and women made equal in the eyes of God-Jesus and his apostles were male due to historical context-Corinthians reflects patriachy not Gods will
C: View that women should be ordained in ministry is still contriversial with many rejecting it as it goes against scripture-limits progress

Q

+Social change in the church-female ordainment in the church of England

A

-C of E voted to ordain the first female preist in 1994 and the first female bishop in 2015, many reformed churches now also ordain women-women now have positions of authority within the church due to campaigns-shows clear progress has been made and the view has validity-major churches are now begining to challenge traditional views on the role of women in ministry and women can now have authority
-Shows clear progress compared to the past
C: However, the fact it created contriversy within the denomonation with many leaving the church because of the vote shows progress is limited as many still hold traditional views about womens position in the Church and reject the idea of female ordainment-hasnt fully undermined or replaced the traditional view

Q

-The view women should be ordained is rejected by many fundamentalist Christians

A

-Conservative Christians argue that the view women should be ordained is a misrepresentation of scripture for an agenda, writings in Corinthians clearly state women should not be allowed authority in the Church, that men should have authority over women and thus women are inherently inferior to men which is Gods will and thus shouldn’t have positions of power-reject the view progress should be made as unbiblical and going against scripture-men and women have different roles
-Ethics link and NML-Aquinas suggests its part of Gods natural order that women are subject to men-suggests its immoral for the Church to ordain women as it is going against Gods natural law and challenging his intrinsic authority and commands
-Such views prevent progress being made as many Churches and Christians reject the view that progress should be made
C: Liberal interpretation of such teachings e.g reflects patriachy however such commands like that given by God directly show men and women aren’t equal-the view they should have positions of authority is unconvincing limiting progress
-Rejectionist feminists argue that the fact the church is fundamentally based on such patriachal ideas means true progress can never be made,

Q

-Progress is limited to some Protestant denomonations and reformed churches-rejected by major churches like the Roman Catholic Churchj

A

-The view progress has been made is limited by the fact that major churches such as Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches refuse to ordain women as they see it as unbiblical and going against scripture
-Preists perform the eucharist and are meant to represent Christ, women cannot represent Christ, scripture clearly suggests women are not allowed positions of authority and thus reject the idea that progress should be made and do not allow women positions of authority, this view is also held by many Fundamentalist and Evangelical churches and some protestant denomonations, thus the view that progress has been made in the Church is invalid as progress is limited to certain denomonations as some entirely reject the view that progress should be made
C: It can be argued that ordainment can be biblically justified and that women can represent Christ as the view Christ is literally male is invalid however the view lacks convincingness for major Churches so its ability to make progress remains limited and the view only has some validity.
