Atonement Flashcards
Ransom Theory
Prominent in the Church-Developed by Aluen-Atonement is victory over the devil
-Original theories saw Jesus death as a needed sacrifice to compensate for/pay the price of original sin for the whole world so we can be forgiven and to reach salvation-based on the idea God needs a blood sacrifice to forgive sin
Jesus death is the ransom or price needed to liberate from sin-some theologians argue the price of sin/jesus death was payed to the devil as he holds humanity captive-God offered Jesus death to him to free us from sin so we can reach salvation and go to heaven.
+Biblical Support, Convincing in Fundamentalist Christian churches and over thought and belief Hebrews 9:22’there will be no forgiveness without blood
–Devil ransom undermines Gods omnipotence as it suggests God is subject to the devil or has to pay him in some way-he could free sin without sacrifice.(Hick)
Penal Models
-Suggests that like the legal system, Jesus death is a penalty or punishment needed in order to forgive original sin-Jesus acts as a substitute for all of humanity taking on their punishment for sin so that we can be ‘forgiven’ for them, restoring the relationship between man and God allowing forgiveness and to enter heaven
-Bible suggests that blood is needed for forgiveness supporting the idea humanity can only achieve redemption through punishment in the form of sacrifice, biblical support, convincing to fundamentalist christians who accept we have original sin that needs to be atoned for through sacrifice for forgiveness
-Too literal
Satistfaction Models
Developed by Anselm-Based on the idea that Jesus death is satisfaction- a means to restore Gods dignity and to restore the relationship between man and God, allow forgiveness salvation etc for original sin-an offering to satisfy God-only Jesus as a ‘God-Man’ can be an adequate sacrifice to satisfy God-based on the fuedal system where an offering was needed if to restore the dignity of the king if they offended him for satisfaction and reconciliation
-Outdated, based on a penal system
