EQ4 Flashcards
What is meant by a long profile river?
This is when you measure the gradient of the river from source to mouth.
How does the river Eden’s landscape change along its long profile
(upper/middle/lower). Consider: channel shape, valley profile, gradient,
discharge, velocity and sediment size and shape?
The river Edens river changes as it goes down as the source is thin with a v shaped valley and it widens as it goes to the middle course then you get to the mouth.
What are the reasons for these changes?
This is mainly due to there being a need for more water to go down the river.
Compare hydraulic action with abrasion
Hydraulic action is when water its self hits against the rock where as abrasion is when rock erosion the cliffs
Define weathering
This is where the atmosphere water and animals all affect the break down of rocks.
Compare freeze thaw and biological weathering
Freeze thaw is when water gets into rocks and expands and erodes the rock, biological is where animals and roots erode rock.
Compare traction with suspension transport
Traction is where rocks roll on the river bed suspension is where fine light materials carry through the water.
Compare a flashy and subdued hydrograph
Flashy is where there is rain then a really quick flood
Subdued is when there is a stable time for there to be a flood.
