EQ4: 4.7 Flashcards
Explain how human factors (urbanisation, land-use change and
deforestation) can affect flood hydrographs.
Trees would be cut down for farming taking away the interception. As a result, there would be more rainfall on the ground which increases surface run off. This would increase the flow.
Explain how physical and human factors cause river flooding in the
River Eden.
Human factor= drainage ditches have been dug in the drainage basin to increase the surface flow to the main river. This causes flooding because more water is going to the river and there is too much water.
Physical factor= Cumbria is on the west coast of the uk. This is significant because it us facing the SW prevailing winds. This causes flooding because a lot more relief rain is there.
What are the effects of flooding on people and environment? What
problems were caused?
Local services such as schools, healthcare, shops and offices were forced to close. Residents suffered from anxiety and psychological trauma. Public transport was damaged.
