EQ3 Flashcards
For a rural place you have studied, evaluate the impact of international migration on its population (20m).
International migration refers to the movement of people from one country to another for a short time or permanently. International migration has impacted the population in Lincolnshire as it has largely impacted the area’s ethnicity.
Lincolnshire can be described as ethnically diverse mainly because of international migration, Boston, one of Lincolnshire’s largest towns, saw its overseas-born population increase by 470% between 2001 and 2011. this has resulted in around 14,333 people being classified as British because of international migration from places such as Latvian. although migration has some impact on the population characteristics of the area, 2011 census showed the area had the highest number of eastern Europeans migrants (1 in 10)local farmers pleased that they are able to recruit cheap and hardworking migrant workers where before there were only 1500 native job seekers the picking, plucking and packing jobs which are in need of labourers for farming are rarely done by locals, this can lead to challenges for both the migrant workers who are often exploited by gang masters with no trade protection
the establishment of Lithuanian supermarkets, polish restaurants, a polish pub and several EU stores which has caused unemployment to rapidly decline to below the national average e.g. 4.4% compared to 5.2% nationally- larger population maintains and funds services e.g. schools and maternity services in addition to creating a wider variety of jobs and improving the high street-can cause tensions as there are negative perceptions of migrants ‘stealing jobs’ in addition to money being sent back to their home countries rather than being spent in the uk e.g. remittances from the UK to Poland was estimated at around $1.2bn in 2013
more than half of the Polish-born adults living in Britain are aged 25-35 and therefore tend to have less health issues immigrants tend to be younger than the local population which has improved the social vitality of the area in an otherwise ageing population which reduces pressure on healthcare services however younger people who are concentrated in one area can cause issues such as pressure on education services as 11% of children born in the UK in 2014 had one parent who was an EU migrant with boston council reporting a sharp increase in the increasing use of services for children. international migrants tend to be younger people in search of employment and services offered in urban areas like London
Overall, International migration has impacted the population of Lincolnshire drastically. International migration has brought Lincolnshire economic growth and activity due to large, low wages working force.
using figure 1, suggest why international migration tend to live in distinctive, segregated areas (3)
international migrants tend to live in distinctive, segregated areas as there could be an existing cluster of certain ethnic groups ie. family members or friends who can offers housing and economic opportunites in the city. This clustering means there also will be shared characteristics, meaning new incoming immigrants feel more supported. Similar culture and ethnic diversity can be restaurants as shown in figure 1 which provides similar foods and snacks which they have in their country of origins therefore creating togetherness
explain why urban spaces reflect the ethnicity of their area (6)
evaluate the ways in which level of segregation reflect cultural, economic and social variation and change over time
evaluate the impact of changes to the diversity of an area on the relationship between the long-term residents and recent-in migrants ( 20)
