Q

explain why perception of an urban area may change over time (3)

A

Perception of an urban area can be undesirable. For example, Victoria london was perceived as dangerous and threatening because of poverty and crime which meant it was seen as a lower-class area. now urban areas are perceived differently. They could be seen as a attractive because of their range of economic opportunites and the variety of social and leisure activities. Therefor inner city areas are more likely to have enclaves with similar background, encouraging other migrants to move here.

Q

using figure 1, suggest why different age group might perceive urban areas differently (6 marks)

A

In Figure 1, there is a young family and a couple in the picture. Therefore it is more likely that urban areas like manchester or nearby in communter villages will be deemed more attractive by young gradutes or those of working and child- bearing age, therefore increasing population as more young famillies can raise their children in environment with well-regarded schools and job opportunities
however, urban areas might be perceived differently by the eldery. For example, elderly population might move away from the city due to congestion and more younger individuals and may put someone off. As the population is increasing due to the high amount of young people.

Q

using figure 2, suggest how quantitative data can affect an urban area’s desirability (6)

A

in figure 2, manchester’s average house prices is £293,534 whereas in london, the high living cost is 58% and is more expensive than other urban areas. Therefore, quantitative data can affect an urban areas desirability as Manchester is less expensive than London and it is more likely that people from London might move there as it is cheaper to live there.
however, Manchester’s crime rate is 383 per capita which is lower than London. London has high crime rates around 12, 786. This indicates that london is dangerous and threatening to live in and manchester is safer to live in so which means that it is less dangerous and more desirable.

Q

using figure 1, suggest why different age groups might perceive rural areas differently (6)

A

eldery population might perceive rural areas differently than younger people or children. For example, they view it as tranquil and a form of isolation due to the natural landscapes and idyllic nature as seen in figure 1. The idea of peace and quiet through lack of congestion and wealth of space.
however, Younger people especially teenagers and children can perceived rural areas as boring and not fun. It is undesirable for them due to the lack of social spaces such as pubs and bars and n form of social life. Lack of close proxmity to working opportunites and costly commute via train can deter young people from moving to rural areas and therefore the ageing population.

Q

For a local place you have studied evaluate the view that media has an important impact on how people perceive their living space (20 marks)

A

Different media outlets have an important impact on how people perceive their living space which can provide contrasting evidence about the image people have of London. Different representations of London can influence perceptions of cultural and demographic issues and statistical evidence to determine whether people have a positive or negative image of London.

this was shown by a survey with numerous different categories which suggested that people view London as a mainly positive living environment, for example the majority of people (75%) agree that London is a good place for a night out and 40% strongly agree that is it a good place to work some residents of local living spaces will share their views in questionnaires and survey answers which may have a range of categories such as the area being a ‘good place to raise children’ or a ‘good place to work’ depends on age, negative perceptions tend to be focused around the opinions of older people e.g. 80% disagree to some extent that London is a good place to retire in addition to negative perceptions relating to safety increasing with age. this is a significant way in which places can be evaluated as a wide variety of people can be asked which means there is a more representative way which people evaluate their living spaces

Perceptions of London can depends on the stage of the life cycle, for example a younger person who may be in London for university is likely to have a more positive perception due to a range of activities such as nightclubs and restaurants compared to an older person who may feel socially isolated it also depends on ethnicity as some people may feel unsafe in certain areas or feel excluded in more suburban areas compared to the inner city which is likely to be more ethnically diverse moreover, perceptions vary depending on whether the person is an outsider or an insider as outsiders of urban areas such as London may perceive it having high crime rates, high deprivation rates and poor environmental quality compared to an insider who is likely to have a more positive image.

a range of media used to represent different perspectives and opinions so that different stakeholders are represented, examples of media include social media such as Instagram and twitter, local newspapers and national newspapers such as the daily mail in recent years, this has included headlines such as social cohesion between different cultures, filming for films set in Camden such as Paddington and the lady in the van, most of these stories have been positive which suggests that the majority of people see Camden as a multicultural, art hub ,there are a number of local newspapers in Camden including the Camden new journal, the ham and high and the guardian which reflect the current local issues, perceptions and the opinions of the area which readers are interested in editorial bias in addition to reader bias, could be argued that the opinions reflect readers because readers seek out their own views in an ‘echo chamber’ type situation. However this can be both positive and negative, such as the representation of Camden in films such as Paddington Bear and the Lady in the Van in addition to music such as Imelda May’s song (Kentish town waltz- 2011) which captures the essence of Kentish town at that time

overall, the different types of media including social media, tv reports and newspapers has a significant impact on the way that people evaluate their living spaces. Statistics used in the media can also be manipulated to suit an individual’s agenda or to create a positive or negative image of the place. Individuals are influenced differently depending on a few factors such as age, gender and culture, local opinions also vary depending on social characteristics.
