EQ2 coastal Processes And Landforma Flashcards
What is traction
Very large boulders are pushed along the sea bed by the force of water
What is saltation
Large particles such as pebbles or gravel are too heavy to be carried in suspension. The force of the water causes them to bounce
What is suspension
Very fine material such as silt and clay particles is whipped up by turbulence and Carried along the water
What is solution
Substances that can dissolve are carried along in the water eg limestone
Is dissolved into water that is slightly acidic
What has a headland got to do with a wave attack
It suffers concentrated wave energy
What has a bay got to do with the angle of a wave attack
Suffers dissipated wave energy
What are rip currents
They are powerfully underwater current occurring In areas close to the shoreline one some beaches when plunging wave cause a build up if water at the top of the beach . The backwash is forces underwater due to resistance from breaking waves
What is LSD
A process responsible for moving significant amounts of sediment along the coast
what is rotational slumping
it’s just slumping of a cliff face
beach definition
accumulation of deposited sediment
what are destructive waves characteristics
weak awash and strong backswash
how do destructive waves influence the profile of the beach
creates a steep profile of usually a shingle dominated beach
how to tell if a beach is under constructive or destructive waves
the steepness of its profile
summer beaches profiles are
gently sloping and winter can be steeper
example of a low energy coast
blakeney spit
landforms of submergence
3
fjords
dalmatian coast
rias
what does land topography mean
how high the land is relative to the sea level
