Q

Superpowers + emerging nations = increased their wealth + standard of living

A

Leading 2 an accelerated rise in the demand for energy + other resources. This can cause both local + global environmental damage from localised river pollution 2 CC + global sea level rise
Providing these resources can lead 2 deforestation + desertification. Scarring of landscape during mining + carbon footprint associated w/ transportation of these goods
Demands 4 energy grow higher more environmentally sensitive areas = Arctic could be exploited w/ unconventional sources + methods such as fracking growing more pop + energy pathways becoming more complex and risky

Q

EU = superpower = CC

A

S = EU have become global leaders in tackling CC w/ EU 20:20:20 targets + EU Emissions Trading Scheme = was the 1st major carbon trading market + remains the biggest one today
COMP: argued the USA has been more reluctant 2 lead on CC w/ it’s failure to ratify the Kyoto Protocol + recent shift towards unconventional sources of energy

Q

China S = CC

A

COMP 2 EU China has become the worlds largest carbon emitter = 2007 + accounts for 1/2 the worlds annual coal consumption
Chinas air pollution have killed 350,000-500,000 each year
H/ shift in Chinas approach 2 CC w/ China becoming a world leader = renewable energies.

Q

Superpower footprints

A

Maintaining a large economy a military machine w/ global reach + a wealthy pop requires energy, mineral, land + water resources
E.g. coal
China accounts = 50% worlds coal consumption but only has 19% of worlds pop
Chinas = worlds largest producer + importer = iron ore

17
Q

Why has Chinas’s coal consumption inc

A

Developing nation - Part of BRICS
Electricity generation, industrial use, domestic use
Coal consumption is decreasing slowly due 2 stricter regulations on coal consumptions = cities.
Decline in US due 2 coal plant closures + mine retirements. Advancements in renewables
Europe: Germany + Uk have made sig coal cuts

18
Q

Recent + predicted growth = resource consumption

A

China + India already consume large proportions = global resources + this trend is set 2 continue + even accelerate due 2 large pops + continued rapid econ growth
Chinas middle class has now overtaken = USA 2 become the largest in the world
At global level consumption of food = predicted 2 rise by 70-100% by 2050 + energy consumption is expected 2 inc = 30-60% by 2050
