A

Educating people produces a more skilled workforce meaning that the country can afford more goods and offer more services. This can bring money into the country through investment and trade.
Educated people earn more, pay more taxes. Provides money so the country can spend on development.

Poorer countries lack have a lack of clean water and poor health care mean that many people suffer from diseases such as maleria and cholera.
People who are ill cant work, no economic contribution. Expensive medicine or health care.

Colonised (ruled by another country) - often at a lower level of development when they gain independence than they would be if they had not been colonised.
European countries colonised much of Africa in the 19th century. Controlled the economies of their colony and removed raw materials and slaves and sold back manufactured goods.

  • Authoritarian governments can put development policies in place without worrying about anyone stopping them, this can be very good for economic development, things can also become very bad - Cuban economic crash.
  • Corrupt governments can hinder development.
  • Countries with good international relations are more likely to get good trade agreements. Also get loans from international organisations to invest in development projects.
