Q

Explain how the high specific heat capacity of water is biologically significant to organsims

[4 marks]

A

The hydrogen bonds between water molecules rewuire a great amount of energy to overcome
This gives water a high specific heat capacity
This means that the temperature of water is stable and does not change rapidly, this stabl enviroment is crucial for enzyme function in organsims

Q

Explain how cohesion and adhesion support plant transport systems

[5 marks]

A
  1. Hydrogen bonding between water molecules causes the molecules to be attracted t eachother throguh cohesion. This causes a continuous column of water molecules in xylem vessles
  2. Hydrogen bonding between water molecules and celulose molecules in the xylem walls causes these molecules to be attracted to eachother through adhesion
  3. Cohesion and adhesion enable capillary action where the water molecules can rise up the xylem vessel against the force fo gravity
