EQ's Flashcards
1
Q
Which ion is required for the hydrolysis of starch by an enzyme?
[1 mark]
A
Cl-
2
Q
Describe the formation of the polysaccharide cellulose
[4 marks]
A
- Formed by a condensation reaction
- Water is produced
- Alternate beta-glucose monomers are upside-down
- due to the position of the OH group on carbon 1
3
Q
Explain how the high specific heat capacity of water is biologically significant to organsims
[4 marks]
A
The hydrogen bonds between water molecules rewuire a great amount of energy to overcome
This gives water a high specific heat capacity
This means that the temperature of water is stable and does not change rapidly, this stabl enviroment is crucial for enzyme function in organsims
4
Q
Explain how cohesion and adhesion support plant transport systems
[5 marks]
A
- Hydrogen bonding between water molecules causes the molecules to be attracted t eachother throguh cohesion. This causes a continuous column of water molecules in xylem vessles
- Hydrogen bonding between water molecules and celulose molecules in the xylem walls causes these molecules to be attracted to eachother through adhesion
- Cohesion and adhesion enable capillary action where the water molecules can rise up the xylem vessel against the force fo gravity
