1
Q

A displacement reaction is as follows

Zinc + Calcium Oxide → Zinc Oxide + Calcium

Explain why this reaction is not possible

[2 marks]

A

Zinc is less reactive than calcium

so it cannot displace calcium

Q

A student placed a piece of copper wire into an iron sulfate solution

What, if anything, would be observed and why?

[2 marks]

A

No reaction

As copper is less reactive than iron so it will not displace iron from its compound

Q

A student places a strip of magnesium into a solution of zinc chloride

What, if anything, would be observed?

[2 marks]

A

The magnesium strip would disappear and solid zinc would be formed

This is because magnesium is more reactive than zinc so it displaced zinc from its compound

Q

Zinc displaces iron from an iron sulfate solution

In this reaction which species is reduced?

[1 mark]

A

Fe2+ ions

you MUST say IONS here because it is the ION of iron which gains electrons and so is reduced!!!

Q

Zinc displaces iron from an iron sulfate solution

In this reaction explain why each species is oxidised or reduced

[2 marks]

A

Zinc is oxidised because it loses electrons (goes from Zn to Zn2+)

Iron is reduced because it gain electrons (goes from Fe2+ion to Fe)

Q

Explain in terms of ions and molecules what happens when an acid reacts with an alkali

[3 marks]

A

H+(aq) + OH-(aq)H2O(l)

or

In aqueous solutions, acids produce H+ ions and alkalis produce OH-. The ions react to produce liquid water (H2O)

YOU CAN JUST WRITE THE IONIC EQUATION AND GET FULL MARKS!!!!!! Just remember to write the state symbols so (aq), (aq) and (l) :)

Q

A student added copper metal to colourless silver nitrate solution
The student observed:
Pale grey crystals forming
The solution turning blue

Explain how these observations show that** silver** is less reactive than copper

[3 marks]

A

Copper is more reactive than silver and so displaces silver from its compound

The copper ions produced are blue, so the solution changed colour to blue

An the pale grey crystals are the solid silver that was produced

(the copper is ions because it is OXIDISED and becomes part of the compound, these IONS are what turned the solution blue!!!)
