Displacement Reactions Flashcards
What is oxidation?
In terms of electrons
The loss of electrons
What will the half equation for an oxidation reaction look like?
Element → Element’s ion + Lost Electrons
when it’s oxidation, it’s LOSING so the addition is on the other side because the first one is alone
What is reduction?
In terms of electrons
The gaining of electrons
What will the half equation of a reduction reaction look like?
Element’s ion + Gained electrons → Element
When a strip of a more reactive metal is placed inside a solution of a less reactive metal and an acid what observations would be made?
The solution will change colour
The metal strip will disappear
The solid of the less reactive metal will be formed
When a strip of a more reactive metal is placed inside a solution of a less reactive metal and an acid why is it that observations would be made?
The strip of metal is more reactive than the metal in the compound so the more reactive metal displaces the less reactive metal from its compound
