EQ Diagnostic analgesia Flashcards
What are the contraindications for nerve blocks?
Suspected fracture, cellulitis (seeding), uncooperative horse
Why may there be a poor response to nerve blocks?
Severe pain, poor technique, nerve variation, SCB pain, neurectomy
What is the onset of action time for mepivicaine/ bupivicaine?
5 minutes
What is the duration of action of mepivicaine?
90-180 minutes
What is the duration of action of bupivicaine?
4-8 hours
What are the commonly used nerve blocks of the hoof?
Palmer digital, DIP, Navicular joint, abaxial sesamoid
What are the commonly used nerve blocks of the dital limb?
Low4-point and high4-point, median. ulna, carpal joint/ sheath, other tendon sheaths
Which structures are desensitised with the palmar digital nerve block?
Mainly PIP
Outline the technique for placing a palmar digital nerve block.
23G, 5/8” needle, 1.5-2ml LA at lateral and medial neurovascular bundle on the caudal edge.
Which structures are desensitised with the abaxial sesamoid nerve block?
PDNB + pastern joint, distal sesamoidean ligaments, coronary band, dorsal extension
Outline the technique for placing an abaxial sesamoid nerve block
23G 5/8” needle, 2ml LA at 2 sites, immediately palmar to the neurovascular bundle at the abaxial surface of the proximal sesamoids
Which structures are desensitised with the DIP joint block?
DIP joint, collateral ligaments, navicular bursa/ bone, dorsal sole
Outline the technique for placing a DIPJ block
Weight bearing, palpate depression proximal to coronary band, insert needle vertically through skin/ extensor tendons. 20G 1.5” needle - 6ml
Which structures are desensitised with the Navicular block?
Navicular - specific
Outline the technique for placing a navicular bursa block.
Weight bearing, 18 G spinal needle at the median ridge between the heel bulbs
