Epithelium And Glands Flashcards
Where is epithelial tissue found?
It can be found on all internal external surfaces of your body.
What is the purpose of epithelial tissue?
The purpose is relative to location but Combe to protect, secrete or for absorption.
What tissue lines body cavities, hollow organs and is the major tissue in glands?
Epithelial tissue
What are some examples of epithelial tissue?
Sweat glands
Lining of the intestines respiratory tract and abdominal cavity
Outer layer of the skin (epidermis)
Parts of the Epithelial cell include?
Cell membrane, Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Microvilli, Cilia, Stereocilia
What are the Microvilli?
Non-motile finger like structures on the surface of these cells that increase surface area to allow for the better absorption of substances.
Where can Microvilli be found?
The small intestine
What are motile tiny hair like structures found on the surface of epithelial cells in order to move cells or substances along the outer surface of the cell called?
Cilia
What are stereocilia?
Specialized Microvilli that resemble cilia and are found on the epithelial tissue inside your inner ear for balance.
How are epithelia classified ?
They are classified based on the number of cell layers, and the shape of the cells in the surface layer.
If an epithelium has on layer what is it called?
Simple epithelium
If there are two one more layers of cells what is it called?
Stratified epithelium
What are the three types/shapes of epithelial cells?
Squamous, cuboidal and columnar
What are the features of simple squamous epithelium?
Single layered, flattered and/or centrally located nuclei
What are The functions of simple squamous epithelia?
Cardiovascular system - transport of fluids
Lungs - gas exchange via capillaries
Peritoneal cavity - reduction of friction between visceral organs
What are some examples of simple squamous epithelium?
Lining of the loops of Henle, outer wall of the intestine lining the inner surface of the cornea
Blood vessels, lungs, mesothelium, heart
What are the features of simple cuboidal epithelium?
Single square like layer, spherical centrally located nucleus
What are the Functions of the cuboidal epithelium?
Secretion, protection, absorption, transportation of filtered substances
What are some examples of cuboidal epithelium ?
Tubules of the Kidney, follicles of the thyroid, surfaces of the ovaries, excretory ducts etc
What occurs as a result of the shape and dimension of the cuboidal epithelium?
Due to the greater thickness it allows the cytoplasm to be rich in mitochondria and other organelles to facilitate high levels of active transport.
What are the features of simple columnar epithelium?
Tall, single layered and the nucleolus is nasally located and elongated
Name some functions of simple columnar epithelium?
Absorption, protection, secretion of mucus in some cases goblet cells
