Cell Structure Flashcards
What is the “brain” of the cell?
The nucleus
What is the smallest living unit in biology called?
A cell
Why is the cell the smallest unit instead of the organelles within it?
This is because the cell is functionally complete while the organelles are made for specific functions not capable of sustaining the body alone.
What are the parts of the nucleus?
The nuclear envelope, nuclear pores, nucleolus and the chromatin.
What does the nuclear envelope consist of?
Inner and Outer membrane
What can be found on the inner membrane?
Lamins - they help with cell division and help maintain the structure of the envelope.
What is the purpose of the nuclear pores?
They allow substances to travel from within the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
What is the purpose of the nucleolus?
To produce rRNA
