Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Tissue
a group of similar cells and extracellular products
that perform a common function
Four basic tissue types
epithelial, muscle, connective, nervous (E=MCN)
Epithelial tissue
“lining of” all cavities/surfaces of structures throughout the body
Epithelial tissue function
sensation, physical protection, secretion, selective permeability
Intercellular junctions in epithelium (4)
tight, adhering, desmosomes and gap
Tight junctions
Encircles cells near their apical surface; Prevents passage between cells
Adhering Junctions
Belt-like; Formed completely around the cell deep to the tight junction, Microfilaments act like a purse string to stabilize the apical surface of the epithelial cell
Desmosomes
button/snap between adjacent cells that resists mechanical stress; hemidesmosomes stabilize to basement membrane
Gap junctions
cell-cell junction (channel passage) is formed by a group of proteins called connexons to form a pore; synchronized signals
Epithelia general cell shapes (3)
squamous, cuboidal, columnar
Epithelia layers (3)
simple (single), stratified (multiple), pseudostratified (appears as multiple but all touch cell basement), transitional
Epithelial surface’s (3)
apical (top), lateral (middle), basement membrane
Keratinized cells
“ghost” nuclei because cells are dead and instead contain keratin; located on epidermis of skin; protection
Nonkeratinized
cells contain nuclei; located in oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, vagina, anus; protection
Rows present when stratified cuboidal and columnar
