Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
What are the layers of epithelial membrane?
apical, lateral, basal
What is on the apical surface?
cilia, flagella, microvilli, stereocilia
What is on the lateral surface?
cell junctions and adhesions
Zonula Occludens/Tight Junction
on cell apex, seals off the intercellular space, attache specific integral membrane occludins
Zonula Adherens/Adhering Junction
basal to tight junction, maintains seal, actin microfilament forms terminal web to attach to plaque via cadherins
Gap Junction/Nexus & Communication Junction
disk shape with intracellular gap, form continuous pores that bridge intercellular gap, found in most tissues
Macula Adherens/Desmosome
see with attachment plaques, cadherins insert to plaques via intermediate filaments, stablilize attachments, but allow flow
hemidesmosomes
cytoplasmic surface basal, integrins mediate connection between basal lamina and intermediate filaments, adaptor proteins connect integrins
What’s on the basal surface?
Epithelial cells rest
What makes up basement membrane?
reticular lamina and basal lamina
What makes up basal lamina?
lamina lucida and lamina densa
Location simple squamous
posterior cornea, blood vessel & lymph (endothelium), body cavities (mesothelium)
location pesudostratified
respiratory tract (have long cilia)
location of translational epithelium
4-6 cell layers with two nuclei, lines urinary tract
Location simple cuboidal
mostly in kidney, some have microvilli
