Q

Serous Membrane

A

*Two layered Membrane with potential space between. 1. Parietal: Lines wall of cavities 2. Visceral: Wraps around organs *Both produce serous fluid which reduces friction between tissues & organs.

Q

Stratified Columnar Epithelium Location

A

Not located in many places
Found in Vas Deferens (male reproductive) & parts of the Pharynx, junction of distal esophagus & cardiac sphincter.

Q

Basal Cell Carcinoma

A

*80% of skin cancers, usually caused by too much exposure before ago 20.
*Looks like pimple that won’t go away.
*99% cure rate

A

*Functions like tarp over boat
*Ex.: skin

23
Q

1st degree burns, S&S, Healing Timer, & Treatment

A

Top part of the epidermis is burned irritating nerve endings.
S&S: Painful, red, no blisters.
Healing: 3-7 days
Treatment: Cool compress & aloe vera

24
Q

Psudostratified Columnar Epithelium Function

A

Sweep debris out of lungs, goblet cells produce mucin.

EXO means

26
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
\*15% of skin cancers \*too much sun exposure \*can appear red/scaly (sometimes bleeds), but doesn't heal & go away. \*99% cure rate
27
Simple squamous epithelial location
- Lines inside of all blood vessels(endothelium) and heart(endocardium) - line walls of capillaries & responsible for feeding tissue & alveoli(air sacs of the lungs)
28
3 Types of Carcinomas
1. Basal Cell Carcinoma 2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma 3. Malignant Melanoma
29
Transitional
Stretchy and variably shaped
30
3rd degree burn treatment
\*IV Fluids administration & increase caloric intake \*IV antibiotics \*Debridement (Removal of dead skin) wrapping wounds w/ protective covering or skin grafts. \*Many months of skin grafts & compression bandages. (keeps scar tissue thickness down) & physical/emotional therapy.
31
2nd degree burns, S&S, Healing Timer, & Treatment
Epidermis & into the dermis S&S: Painful, red, blisters, pealing of damaged/ dead skin days later Healing: 7-10 days depending on how deep the burn. Treatment: Cool compress, aloe vera, do not break blisters. (can open the skin to infection).
32
A part in ABCD Method
ASYMMETRY (a mole should be round & not have unequal sides.)
33
Simple columnar epithelium structure
Elongated cells, nuclei are all located near basement membrane, often have microvilli or cilia
34
Endocrine
- Makes product & secretes it into the matrix. - Capillaries come inside the gland & pickup the product - product is ALWAYS a hormone
35
Types of Membranes
Cutaneous Mucous Serous
36
Columnar
Column-like
37
Cellularity
Made up of tightly packed cells
38
Transitional Epithelium
Designed to distend & return to its normal size, as in lining of the urinary bladder.
39
Simple cuboidal epithelium structure
Single layer of cube-shaped cells with centrally located nuclei
40
B part in ABCD Method
BOARDER (the boarders should be smooth and not jagged.)
41
Simple
Single layer all of the same type
42
ENDO means
Inside
43
Exocrine
-Secretes its products outside of itself using a duct. EX. Of exocrine product: saliva, mucous, sweat, enzymes, etc.
44
Malignant Melanoma
\*3-5% of skin cancers (This % is growing) \*sun exposure & has a genetic link (Increase w/ tanning bed.) \*Grows down through the basement membrane & can be spread. (metastasis) \*DEADLY, survival depends on early detection.
45
3rd degree burns, S&S, Healing Timer, & Treatment
Entire thickness of the epidermis & dermis S&S: No pain!! Whitish or grayish color, sometimes skin slippage, & oozing of fluid. Healing: Months to one year depending on location & percentage of body burned. Treatment: % of body burned is determined using the "rule of nines" Critical burn & several things must be done at one time in order to help a patient survive.
46
Stratified Columnar Epithelium Structure
Consists of several layers of columnar cells
47
Carcinoma
Any type of cancer to the epithelial tissue (skin cancer).
48
Cuboidal
Cube-shaped
49
C part in ABCD Method
COLOR (Any color changes can be a sign of a pattern.)
50
Simple squamous epithelial function
Well suited for diffusion
51
