Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Simple squamous
Location: alveolar capillaries, lining blood vessels
Function: Reduce friction, permit diffusion
Simple Cuboidal
Location: Thyroid/other glands, kidney tubules
Function: Primarily secretion and absorption
Simple columnar
Location: Digestive tract, uterus, kidney
Function: Secretion and Absorption, protection
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar
Location: Respiratory tract, male reproductive tract
Function: secretion/absorption, slightly protective
Transitional
Location: Urinary bladder
Function: permit stretching; expand and recoil
5 characteristics of epithelial tissue
1) Cellularity (Cells are jam-packed!!)
2)Polarily- apical (top) and basal (bottom) surfaces
3)attachment (Basement membrane)
4) Regenerative (Cells proliferate quickly, can lead to cancer!)
5) Avascular
4 Functions:
-secretion/absorption
-protection
-permeability
-sensations
what are the 2 secretions?
1) Mucous (glycoproteins)
2) serous (watery substance containing enzymes)
2 types of unicellular glands
1) Mucous cells- salivary, trachea
2) goblet cells (more common)- small/large intestines
3 methods of secretion
1) holocrine
2)apocrine
3) eccrine
Eccrine secretion
released via exocytosis (salivary gland)
Holocrine secretion
Released when entire cell bursts and dies (sebaceous glands)
Apocrine secretion
shedding of cytoplasm (mammary gland)
