Cartilage Flashcards
Cells?
-Chondrocytes
-Chondroblasts
Function?
-tough but flexible CT that provides support
Hyaline Cartilage
Function: Reduce friction
Location: Synovial joints (No perichondrium)
Weakest and most common
Elastic Cartilage
Function: stretch and return
Location: auricle of the outer ear, epiglottis, auditory canal
Fibrous Cartilage
Function: Padding (resist compression, prevent bone-bone contact, limit movement)
Location: Menisuc, pubic symphysis, intervertebral disks
What is perichondrium? Is it vascular?
Layer that separates cartilage from surrounding tissue
-vascular
What fibers in cartilage
-mainly collagen, some elastic
collagen Matrix?
firm gel with chondroitin sulfates
What are the two types of cartilage growth?
-appositional (surface)
-interstitial (increased volume)
Appositional cartilage growth
-at surface
-chondroblasts secrete in all directions, get trapped, mature into chondrocytes in lacuna
Interstitial cartilage growth
-increased volume
chondrocyte undergoes division within the lacuna
-daughters secrete more matrix, move apart
