Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Epithelial Tissue Functions, what are they?
Physical Protection.
Selective permeability.
Secretions.
Sensations.
Polarity of epithelial tissue?
Apical surface, lined with Cilia or Microvilli, exposed to external environment.
Basal surface, attached to connective tissue.
Avascularity, Innervation, Regeneration Capacity?
Lacks blood vessels
Detects changes in environment, richly innervated.
High regeneration capacity.
What are the two cell layers?
Simple, one layer
Stratified, 2 or more layers.
What are the cell shapes?
Squamous - flat
Cuboidal - cube, box
Columnar - tall & narrow
What are the four categories of simple epithelia
Simple Squamous
Simple Cuboidal
Simple Columnar(ciliated/nonciliated)
Pseudostratified columnar(ciliated/nonciliated)
What are the four categories of stratified epithelium
Stratified squamous
Stratified cuboidal
Stratified columnar
Transitional
What is pseudostratified? What is transitional epithelium?
Pseudostratified - one layer of tall cells that appears stratified
Transitional - multiple layers of cells that change shape when stretched
Categories of stratified squamous
Keratinized
Nonkeratinized
Function and location of simple squamous
rapid diffusion and filtration, secretion.
Air sacs in lungs(alveoli), lining of lumen of blood vessels and lymph, serous membranes.
Function and location of simple cuboidal
Absorption and Secretion
Kidney tubules, thyroid gland follicles, surface of ovary.
Function and location of nonciliated simple columnar
Absorption and secretion, secretion of mucin.
Inner lining of most of digestive tract
Function and Location of ciliated simple columnar
Secretion of mucin and movement of mucus along apical surface.
air passageways of lung and uterine tubes.
Function and Location of nonciliated pseudostratified columnar
protection
rare - lining of part of the male urethra and epididymis
Function and Location of ciliated pseudostratified columnar
protection, secretion of mucin and movement of mucus.
lining of airways of respiratory tract, nasal cavity, trachea.
