epithelial+ endothelial tissue Flashcards
what are the types of columnar epithelium?
cilliated or goblet
where is the columnar epithelium found?
lining the trachea
how do cilliated columnar epithelium help protect the body?
wafts mucus containing pathogens up the trachea and towards the mouth to exit the body and prevent infection
how do goblet cells help to protect the body?
produce mucus which traps foreign particles
what is COPD?
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease- caused by smoking
what are the effects of COPD?
damages cilia, causes mucus build up which leads to coughing excessively
coughing ruptures thin alveoli cells, causing a reduction in surface area for gas exchange and providing ideal environments for bacteria
what are the 4 types of tissue?
nervous tissue, epithelial tissue, muscle tissue and connective tissue
where is the squamous epithelial found?
the alveoli (lungs)
what is the structure of squamous epithelial?
very flat and thin, egg shaped oval nucleus, one cell thick- ideal for gas exchange
where is endothelial tissue found?
lines the inside of blood vessels
what is the function of endothelial tissue?
single layer of flat long cells, orientated lengthways in direction of blood flow, provides smooth surface for blood to flow easily
what is atherosclerosis?
damage to the blood vessels
what are the factors leading for atherosclerosis?
high blood pressure, poor diet, salty diet, carbon monoxide exposure
what are the effects of atherosclerosis?
fatty deposits build up in damaged endothelial lining of blood vessels, deposits form an atheroma (plaque) which narrows blood vessels and restricts blood flow- leading to heart attacks
what are the 3 types of epithelial tissue?
squamous, columnar, endothelial
