Epithelial Cells and Surface Specialisations Flashcards

Q

Differences between mucous membrane and serous membrane (4)

A
  1. Mucous - lines moist internal hollow tubes that open out into exterior
    Serous - lines closed cavities
  2. Mucous - lines respiratory, GI and urinary tract
Serous - lines pleural sac (lungs) pericardial sac (heart) and peritoneum (viscera)
  3. Mucous - secretes mucus
Serous - secretes serum - lubricating thin fluid
  4. Mucous is sticky and prevent pathogen ingress
Serum is thin and promotes friction- free movement

Q

Embryonic development of serous membranes

A

Heart, lungs and viscera develop next to a bag like cavity and the organs invaginate into it. Therefore surrounded by serous membrane with two layers

Parietal serosa - outer lining
Visceral serosa - inner lining
