Epithelial Cells and Surface Specialisations Flashcards
1
Q
Differences between mucous membrane and serous membrane (4)
A
- Mucous - lines moist internal hollow tubes that open out into exterior
Serous - lines closed cavities - Mucous - lines respiratory, GI and urinary tract
Serous - lines pleural sac (lungs) pericardial sac (heart) and peritoneum (viscera) - Mucous - secretes mucus
Serous - secretes serum - lubricating thin fluid - Mucous is sticky and prevent pathogen ingress
Serum is thin and promotes friction- free movement
2
Q
Embryonic development of serous membranes
A
Heart, lungs and viscera develop next to a bag like cavity and the organs invaginate into it. Therefore surrounded by serous membrane with two layers
Parietal serosa - outer lining
Visceral serosa - inner lining
3
Q
Epithelial
A
Sheets of contiguous cells of varied embryonic origin that cover external body surfaces and lines many internal surfaces
4
Q
Simple
A
One cell layer thick
Pseudostratified cells are only simple
5
Q
Compound/ stratified
A
More than one cell layer thick
Transitional cells layer is always stratified.
