Episode 2 Flashcards
Jason says Medea could have stayed
if you had accepted the decisions of those who are stronger than you you could have remained (he is wrong, lying, and arrogant)
- You will be banished, this doesn’t matter to me
Why does JAson claim to have come
I have come here because I’m thinking about your future “my lady” and how you can survive without any money,
JAson tris to give the impression that he is caring and righteous
Even if you hate me, I can never feel badly towards you (taking the moral high ground, he has nothing to hate her for)
Medea mentions that she has helped him, what she has done for him
I saved you and the Argonauts and helped you face your ordeals, killed the dragon
Betrayed my father and my house for you (more passionate than wise)
Killed Pelias at the hands of his own children the most grievous ways to die (so killing your children is most shameless)
-I have no where to turn, all for helping you. Earned the hatred of those close to home
How does she say JAson has repayed her
And you betrayed me even though we have children, if may have been pardonable otherwise
Medea mentions oaths
No more trusting oaths, either the gods no longer rule or men live by new standards of what is right.
Zeus why have I been unable to distinguish a bad man (true nature)
Jason is arrogant
I must be no poor speaker (why? For provoking her?)
I escape the storm of your words, like a trusty helmsman of a ship (nautical imagery)
- You lay too much stress on gratitude,
JAson blames the gods
I think it was Aphrodite who made my voyaging safe (Helen blamed the Trojan war on her)
Tries to claim that Medea has received lots from him
It would be invidious to say love forced you to save me, I won’t go into detail
By helping me you received more than you gave, living in Greece rather than a barbarian country (no longer) you know the workings of justice (yes it is being wronged by him, would have been better not to know it) and law (which she is going to break, his oaths broken)
The Greeks saw you were clever and you won’t reputation (which is now being ruined, or will be), no one would know you if you lived at the farthest end of the world (will be the author of terrible deeds)
Jason tries to claim that his union with Glauce will benefit her
I am now a powerful friend to you and my children (not if she is now exiled)
When I came from Iolkos an exile, a royal marriage meant stability, to live well
My children by you I would place them all on level footing, uniting them into one family, I would benefit the ones now alive (unconvincing, illegitimate ones would be marginalised)
JAson insults the female sex
It was not that I hated sleeping with you (so insensitively phrased) or any other reason
You would agree with me if sex wasn’t provoking you. women have sunk so low that if your sex life is good, you think you have everything, if not then everything becomes repugnant. (After all she has said this is utterly wrong)
Humans should produce children from some other source and a female sex should not exist, then mankind would be free from every evil (insensitive and misogynistic)
What do the Chorus say in response to JAson
superficially convincing, but he is still acting unjustly by betraying his wife
Medea on clever speaking
you are a clever speaker and able to gloss over injustice cleverly.
What does Medea say JAson should have done
You should have talked me round before making this marriage not without me knowing
Jason claims he did it for Medea
I wanted to keep you safe and produce royal siblings for my children and thus defend our house. (There is no proof of this, he hasn’t kept her safe, and the later is flawed)
